HEALTHY HOTEL STAYS DURING THE PANDEMIC

The door to the resort room on Vancouver Island greeted us with a safety seal after we checked in at the Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina. Inside, the unit was as spotless as a Biosafety Level 4 lab, and extra blankets and towels in the hall closet were sheathed in plastic wrap to prove their cleanliness.

Our family travelled to the island from the interior by car and ferry to spend a few days in and around the harbor town of Sooke. Though we’re just a 30-minute drive from the manicured gardens and tea rooms of the province’s capital city, the vibe west of Victoria couldn’t be wilder.

OUR SOOKE ADVENTURE

After landing in Victoria, picking up our rental car from National and making our way along the winding roads to Sooke, where my in-laws live, we decided to venture down to Whiffin Spit. It’s not far from my in-laws’ house and this would be my son’s first-ever chance to see the ocean. My husband and I have been to Whiffin Spit before, on previous visits with his parents, but my son, who is four, had been talking non-stop about seeing the ocean and collecting seashells

The sign on our kitchen counter advised that if we were cooking crab for dinner, we should use the burner on the barbecue on our main balcony. My niece Alexis and I had just arrived at Sooke Harbour Resort and I knew immediately that the ocean would play a big part in our stay.

Planning a seaside getaway? Consider the Canadian seaside town of Sooke, on the south coast of Vancouver Island.

I had the chance to explore Sooke recently while road-tripping along the island’s Pacific Marine Circle Route, a looping scenic drive that takes you to wineries, rainforest trails, and remote ocean beaches.

A few weeks ago our family was blessed with a trip to Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina located in Sooke, BC. To be quite honest, I never heard of Sooke, BC before! So of course, I was super happy that we finally had the chance to explore more of our province! It was even more amazing when we were able to bring along my good friend Diana from With Love Diana B and her family along on our trip.

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S SOUTHERN COAST BOASTS A BOUNTY OF ACTION-PACKED ADVENTURE SPOTS TO EXPLORE

My eyes are wide open, yet I can’t see a thing. I push through the panic as I hurriedly rotate the knob that’s affixed to the side of my helmet. A glow beams from my forehead, casting light just above my sight line. Below my feet, a gentle trickle of water flows along a stream that has found its way through a carved rock formation on which I stand, tiptoed.

WILD WEST COAST FAMILY WEEKEND IN SOOKE, VANCOUVER ISLAND

There’s nothing like standing on the edge of the Pacific listening to the roar of the waves, with nothing between you and Japan, 7,610 km away. It’s easier and quicker than you may think to enjoy wild, West Coast beauty, tall Douglas Fir forests and cold surf (if you’re so inclined to enter the water). Just a quick 90-minute BC Ferries ride from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, then a 45-minute drive to Sooke, and you’re practically at the end of the line. Next stop, sushi in Tokyo.
